Al Gore and the future of books

It looks like Al Gore could reshape book publishing.

As reported here, his new book Our Choice is being published as an app that will redefine the reader's experience in ways that Gutenberg wouldn't have dreamed about. The book provides not only text. It moves around for the reader with video, interactive graphics and animation. There's a cover of a 3-D animation of a spinning globe with the title superimposed over it. All you do is tap into the intro and you get a video of Gore introducing the book's topic. Or you can swipe through a visual table of contents. Select a chapter and the chapter title appears on the top three quarters of the screen. A timeline at the bottom allows you to swipe through the pages. To start reading, just touch a page with two fingers to pop it open. Diagrams embedded inside some of the chapters are interactive. You can even move a windmill. Photos are geotagged. Just select an image, tap on a globe icon, and see a world map with a pin showing precisely where the photo was taken.

Significantly, the book is being published by Push Pop Press, a company set up by two former Apple engineers. As we all know, Al Gore sits on the Apple board.

This book will be the first of many more to come. We can expect other publishers to follow. The publishing industry is about to redefine the experience of reading.
