Amazon, Palm and the Kindle phone

Remember Palm? We now have reports from Venture Beat that Amazon is now looking at extracting it from Hewlett Packard's bumbling hands. "A well-placed source tells us that HP is currently looking to rid itself of Palm as soon as possible, and that Amazon is the closest to finalizing the deal, among a handful of contenders,'' Venture Beat reports.

As reported here, that would work in nicely with Amazon's challenge to Apple with the release of its Kindle Fire tablet. "The Kindle Fire will be an Android-powered device, but if the company snatches up Palm's remnants, it could have free reign to redesign webOS to its liking, and optimize the system to further differentiate itself from other tablets and mobile devices on the market. Palm's multi-tasking capabilities could also further enhance the Kindle Fire experience by allowing users to juggle movies, media, and games."

That potentially would allow Amazon to differentiate the Kindle Fire from all the other Android tablets now flooding the marketplace. It opens up the possibility for a whole new line of tablets, and even smartphones. That's a tantalizing proposition when you consider Amazon's dominant role in mobile retail and cloud computing.

And that's where it gets interesting. Tech Digest points out that Amazon's ultimate strategy might be about creating a Kindle phone to rival the iPhone. And Palm might be a perfect fit for that.
