Apple overtakes Google

The big news coming out now is that Apple has now become the world's most valuable brand.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has just overtaken Google. Looking at consumer perception and financial data to estimate the value of the top 100 brands, research company Millward Brown found that Apple's worth had almost doubled in the past year. Its brand value rose by a whopping 84 per cent. The survey found that the Apple empire increased in value by 859% since 2006. It now stands at $153.3 billion, and that's pushed Google off the top spot it had held for the past four years. Google is now worth $111 billion after dropping 2% in the rankings. Google can't match Apple's ability to sell products at a high mark-up.

The question is how long this can last. Technology is unlike any other business. Barriers to entry are low and there aren't regulatory regimes that end up serving the interests of incumbents. Let's remember that technology giants are easily challenged. Microsoft was undermined by Google, Google, which replaced Alta Vista, is now being attacked by Facebook and Twitter, which didn't exist six years ago, is challenging both. What's going to replace Apple.

There's probably a kid sitting in his bedroom now working on it. Technology is like that. If he were alive today, Karl Marx would love technology. Capitalism is all about creative destruction and technology is the one sector where that really works. Apple is top of the heap now, it won't last.
