Apple sues Samsung countersues Apple: business as usual

One of the big legal news stories of the week is the report that Apple is suing Samsung, claiming the Korean company is blatantly ripping off the design of its iPhones and iPads for its Galaxy phones and tablets. In response, Samsung has launched a counter suit in three countries, alleging that Apple is infringing Samsung's patents for reducing power consumption and interruptions during data transmission.

Lawyers claim that these sorts of lawsuits occur whenever there is paradigm-shifting technology. What makes this case more complicated is that Samsung provides Apple with the chips for its products. Which means that the lawsuits, and counter lawsuits, are just the way tech companies do business these days.

As Chang Sea Jin, a business professor at National University of Singapore told Bloomberg: ""Apple is trying to annoy Samsung – they're throwing a ball at Samsung to keep them in check. This is strictly business. The typical way to deal with cases like this is to counter sue. It's not between the management of Samsung and Apple, their lawyers will work it out."

For anyone going into the tech business, make sure you have deep pockets to pay for lawyers. It's the cost of doing business in the tech world.
