Say what you like about Bill Gates but there is no doubting that his wealth has had an impact on global society. The Frugal Dad blog has an infographic showing that Gates has given away 48 per cent of his wealth for charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
So far, he has given away $28 billion. His biggest effort has been towards the eradication of malaria and an end to polio. He was also instrumental in the creation of The Living Pledge which is an effort to get the richest people in the world to publicly commit to giving away half their net-worth in their lifetime. The multi-billionaire Warren Buffet is probably the most well known name to take the pledge.
Business Insider gives us 10 ways that Bill Gates is saving the world. These include funding research to add iron and Vitamin A to bananas with the modified bananas to be distributed in Uganda, almost completely eradicating polio, investing heavily in reducing malaria and trying to vaccinate mosquitoes, funding research that will turn "fecal sludge" into biodiesel fuel, spending over $2 billion to fight HIV and spending $1.5 billion on women and children's health issues.
But probably the most significant is his campaign to get other billionaires to give away their wealth. If that succeeds, it will make the biggest difference of all.
