The big news coming out of the United States is that unemployment is starting to inch its way down. According to the latest figures, US unemployment has slipped to 8.8%, the lowest figure in two years. But it does not mean recovery is on its way. Take a look at what's happening with America's black population.
While unemployment has gone down for the rest of the country, it's actually risen among black Americans, hitting 15.5%. In other words, black unemployment is almost double what it is for the rest of America and it's rising. Something clearly is wrong.
As reported here, the state of black America is worse than it was last year with economic equality declining a percentage point, down to 56.9% from 57.9% in 2010.
What this tells us is that the US economy is still short of tens of millions of jobs and that's reflected in the disproportionately higher unemployment for black Americans. The lower official jobless figure is no sign of a recovery. For the US economy, the state that African Americans find themselves is the canary in the coal mine.
