Bono the tax cheat

Bono the tax cheat

Bono, the anti-poverty campaigner, has over the years copped quite a shellacking for dodging taxes after his band, U2, shifted some of its finances to Holland in 2006 following a government decision to impose a £250,000 cap on tax-free earnings system for artists. Holland has a lower tax rate than Ireland.

Now we have reports that U2 will be hit by huge protests from the activist group Art Uncut which will put up a big banner declaring "Bono Pay Up" at their next performance.

An Art Uncut spokesman said: "Bono claims to care about the developing world, but U2 greedily indulges in the very kind of tax avoidance that is crippling poor nations. We will be showing the very real impact of U2's tax avoidance on hospitals and schools in Ireland. Anyone watching will be made very aware that Bono needs to pay up."
