The fallout from the Gulf oil disaster continues with revelations from the US National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council that BP actually ignored the risks in the lead up to the blow out.
Its report said: "The various failures mentioned in this report indicate the lack of a suitable approach for anticipating and managing the inherent risks, uncertainties, and dangers associated with deepwater drilling operations and a failure to learn from previous near misses."
Other findings show BP made decisions to move ahead despite warning signs. This indicated "insufficient consideration of risk and a lack of operating discipline and that there were insufficient checks and balances for decisions regarding schedule and procedures for well abandonment and considerations for well safety".
The cowboy approach resulted in the worst oil spill in US history and the damage is still be cleared up.
The Financial Times reports that the BP board has pledged to tighten its oversight over the company's day to day operations. This is the same board that had endorsed BP's management's cowboy approach. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to do anything about it.
