After creating the world's worst oil spill which has devastated the environment and leaked more than 205 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, BP has now increased its lobbying. It has spent $2 million peddling influence in Washington, according to the latest disclosure form .
That money was spent in the first quarter of 2011. The amount is slightly more than the $1.8 million quarterly average for BP which operated Deepwater Horizon. The company has fought Democratic-led efforts to repeal an oil spill liability cap, which may have resulted in the company paying greater fines to the federal government for the spill. One year later, that legislation still has not materialized and BP's lobbying ensures it's unlikely to happen.
As part of the campaign to ensure the legislation never materializes, BP is now making big political donations, mostly to the Republicans. It's something I blogged about during the week.
BP is working hard to ensure there will be no restrictive legislation, no fines and no criminal sanctions for perpetrating the worst-ever environmental catastrophe.
