Can bookshops survive?

The future of the book store now looks more problematic especially with news during the week that Amazon had acquired the Book Depository. Amazon's expanding read would leave book shops all over the world even more worried. Many will go under. The ones that survive will be those that change their business model.

So what's the future for book shops? The Economist says the book store model can be transformed.

The magazine says: "Besides coffee, access to Wi-Fi and the occasional yoga mat, what will people pay for to enable a bricks-and-mortar bookstore? Could independent stores charge membership fees, which grant access to books at slightly lower prices? Would a corporate-sponsorship model work? (For example, Eli Lilly could sponsor "Books by authors on Prozac" month at the local haunt.) Perhaps bookstores could become tax-subsidised places where people can browse and linger, but only borrow the books for limited periods of time-what the hell, let's call them libraries."

It will be interesting to see what replaces book shops, and how they will make money.
