You have to hand it to the Tea Party. There are fewer people in the party who believe in climate change than there are those who believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim.
According to a New York Times/CBS News Poll, only 14% of Tea Party members nominated climate change as an environmental issue. For most of them, climate change denial is an article of faith because measures like cap and trade and energy regulations are all about government control.
But then, that makes sense on two grounds. First is the Tea Party demographics: Republican, white and the vast majority are over the age of 55. It's hard to imagine many in that group worried about climate change.
But there's another reason too. The Tea Party is getting its funding from the fossil fuel industry. The Guardian reports that BP and other big emitters are bankrolling Tea Party candidates.
Being ignorant is one thing. But falling for corporate propaganda is something else altogether. It turns the Tea Party from a group claiming to represent ordinary Americans into a servant of self-serving corporate interests.
