Congress now denies climate change

With the Republicans sweeping into power in the US House of Representatives, we can kiss good bye to any prospect of carbon trading being introduced in America. Galvanised by the Tea Party wave, half the Republican caucus in the US Congress now questions the scientific consensus that greenhouse pollution is a threat to civilization. As the New York Times tells us, voters effectively pressed the reset button on climate legislation, ousting cap-and-trade supporters from Congress and leaving behind a House highly polarized on energy.

Only a handful of the new Republican members of Congress actually believe in climate change. Over 100 freshmen Republicans were elected to the 112th Congress. According to this report from progressive blog ThinkProgress, 50% deny the existence of manmade climate change and 86% are opposed to any climate change legislation that increases government revenue.

What else will this mean? Forget about the US taking a leadership role on climate change. And get ready for talk about expanding nuclear power.
