Conrad Black sent back to jail

So media hating mogul Conrad Black has returned to the slammer . As reported in The Wall Street Journal Black is being sent back to jail, after a Chicago judge resentenced him to serve 42 months on mail fraud and obstruction charges.

Black's lawyers had been hoping he would be set free based on prison time already served. Black had spent 29 months in federal prison before he was released last year to pursue a partially successful appeal of his original 78 month sentence. Last October, the US Circuit Court tossed out all but two of Black's convictions from his original trial. So they had some hope.

The arrogance of Black and his lawyers was breathtaking. His earlier convictions were only tossed on technicalities, on the grounds that the the so-called "honest services" laws used to help convict Black did not apply in his case. Black's lawyers at the time claimed it showed he was innocent but they ignored the fact that the court at the time said that the conviction relating to the appropriation of money from his company still applied.

If Black had been less arrogant, he would have got off more easily. As legal experts told the National Post, there would be less time behind bars if he had pleaded guilty like his former associate David Radler. But then, Black was too arrogant to do that and kept insisting on his innocence.

Now it's all over, this is the final chapter. He'll have to serve out the rest of his time. Whatever spin he puts on it, he'll be a convicted felon.
