Corruption crescendo

Corruption crescendo

Is the world becoming more corrupt? A survey by Transparency International, covering more than 91,000 people in 86 nations, has found that 60% now claim that corruption has got worse. Of those who paid bribes, half said it was to 'solve a problem' and one in four said it was to speed up slow processes and decisions. Bribe-takers included police, health officials and tax collectors, according to the survey.

It's a problem being felt around the world but according to Transparency International, the most venal spot is sub-Saharan Africa. But don't get smug. It's a problem in developed countries too.

The survey's findings reflect the impact of the global financial crisis. People reserved their greatest distrust for political parties. According to the survey, 79 per cent rated them corrupt or extremely corrupt. Around 60 per cent rated public officials, parliaments and police as corrupt. Business and the private sector were viewed as corrupt by 51 per cent.

What that tells us is that there is a lot of discontent, disengagement and anger out there. A political nightmare and not good for economies.
