End of the world and Murdoch's evil genius

Rupert Murdoch's decision to close News of the World is not about contrition or even scandal management. It's a cold hard business decision designed to ensure that Murdoch's global television empire will continue to expand.

But there's an even more alarming agenda. British media lawyer Mark Stephens has told Reuters that the paper will be able to destroy all of its incriminating records detailing the phone hacking criminal acts, thus preventing any investigation by Scotland Yard.

When an asset is closed down, it's put in the hands of a liquidator like an accounting firm which then sets about maximising possible returns. It would be in everyone's interests to destroy the documents.

Stephens described it as "a stroke of genius-perhaps evil genius". "Why would the liquidator want to keep the records?" Stephens said. "Minimizing liability is the liquidator's job."

Just another example of how this sordid criminality is institutional.
