Watch out next time you play Farmville on Facebook. Without you knowing it, Facebook is sending all your personal details to advertisers.
The Wall Street Journal reports that with some of its most popular applications, Facebook has been transmitting identifying information-in effect, providing access to people's names and, in some cases, their friends' names-to dozens of advertising and Internet tracking companies. The apps include Zynga Game Network Inc.'s FarmVille, with 59 million users, and Texas HoldEm Poker and FrontierVille.
These apps aren't designed by Facebook but by third parties.
Facebook engineer Mike Vermal has taken to the company's blog accusing the media of a massive beat up. "In most cases, developers did not intend to pass this information, but did so because of the technical details of how browsers work," he says.
Yeah right. Let's remember that Facebook's customers aren't the users. They're the advertisers. Facebook is just looking after its customers.
