Facebook has confirmed that a "coordinated spam attack" has been sending hardcore porn and gore into Facebook users' news feeds. Facebook users are making all sorts of complaints about images of everything from besitaliality to graphic violence and dead babies to Justin Bieber hoaxes.
Adrian Chen at Gawker has suggested that this full on assault could be the work of hacking group Anonymous which is said to be developing a powerful "Guy Fawkes virus" with which they would attack Facebook. Spamming gore and porn is definitely one an Anonymous' specialty.
For its part, Facebook says it's cracking down on it. "We have recently experienced an increase in reports and we are investigating and addressing the issue," Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said in a statement."Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms." Facebook now claims it has identified the ones responsible and is working with its legal team to ensure it won't happen again.
Maybe, but perhaps the problem lies with Facebook's architecture which is vulnerable because it pulls in content from outside sources. Which means it's likely to happen again. Porn will find a way.
