Facebook's smear campaign

The war between Facebook and Google has gone into overdrive.

The Guardian reports that Facebook paid one of the world's biggest PR firms Burson-Marsteller top money to plant negative stories in the media about Google's privacy policies.

Josh Halliday from The Guardian reports: "Paul Cordasco, a spokesman for Burson-Marsteller, told the Guardian on Thursday that the assignment was "not at all standard operating procedure" and was against the company's policies. He added: 'The assignment on those terms should have been declined.' Cordasco confirmed to the Guardian that "the assignment" was now terminated and that Burson-Marsteller was no longer working with the social network. Facebook declined to comment when contacted by the Guardian."

USA Today, which broke the story, has highlighted the way Burson-Marsteller has been conducting a smear campaign against Google. And of course, they were being paid by Facebook.

That's a warning for all journalists when they are investigating Google. Be careful where you get your information from.
