Computer software has become the backbone of modern civilization so organized cyber criminals, state sponsored cyber attackers and terrorist organizations will inevitably exploit design flaws and weaknesses in the applications in order to generate revenue and carry out criminal activities.
The recent attacks that have paralysed Sony where hackers stole data from users of its PlayStation Network represent a case in point.
How alarming then to read the report in Bloomberg that the FBI seems to lack the skills to tackle cyber attacks. According to a US Justice Department report, FBI agents have had trouble investigating cyber attacks involving national security because they didn't have the necessary technical expertise.
It's an issue that highlights the massive skills shortage in IT. "There are about 1,000 security people in the US who have the specialized security skills to operate at world-class levels in cyberspace – we need 10,000 to 30,000," Jim Gosler, founding director of the CIA's Clandestine Information Technology Office was reported saying in the Christian Science Monitor.
