FBI push for Internet wire tapping powers

So now the FBI wants to intrude into people's time on the Internet.

CNet News reports that the FBI wants to Internet tapping powers, claiming its efforts are being thwarted by new technologies revolutionizing Internet communication. They want police to be armed with wiretap orders to conduct surveillance of "Web-based e-mail, social networking sites, and peer-to-peer communications technology." They want to force Internet service providers to build "back doors" to let them in.

In effect, this will turn ISPs into a government agents.

If the FBI is granted this, it's a worry. Critics say the FBI is basically asking for the right to monitor all traffic to determine which bits of the traffic it needs to focus on. It's the electronic equivalent of listening to everybody's phone calls to see which phone call you should be monitoring.

If the FBI gets these powers, there will be no going back. We will see similar regimes popping up in other parts of the world, compromising our freedoms.
