How the hell can anyone get a $1 million line of credit at Tiffany? Did former House Speaker and 2012 presidential aspirant Newt Gingrich get the special treatment? Or can anyone get that sort of deal?
The Washington Post reports that Gingrich had a second line of credit at the high-end jewelry store Tiffany for as much as $1 million dollars. Of course, Politico reported last month that he had a first line of credit of up to $500,000. His wife, the multi-talented Callista Gingrich who was employed by the House Agriculture Committee listed a "revolving charge account" (which is like a credit card) at Tiffany and Company in the liability section of her personal financial disclosure form for two consecutive years. She indicated that it was her spouse's debt.
Now that is a lot of bling. Naturally, it would raise all sorts of questions about how this would go down with American voters at a time when the country's official unemployment rate is over 9%, when more families are on food stamps and are getting evicted from their homes.
But the really fascinating issue is whether Gingrich was getting a special deal. In a statement from Tiffany, the upmarket jewel house acknowledged that Gingrich had a Tiffany Time Account which extended him an interest free loan for a year. That sounds pretty special.
Not that it worries Gingrich who has told CBS he lives a "frugal" life. He said it with a straight face too.
