Fossil fuel firms pushing shale gas over renewables

Studies have found that the new kid on the block in the energy market, shale gas, actually produces more climate change than coal. According to the studies, shale gas wells leak substantial amounts of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. Shale gas also requires large amounts of water to release it from rocks, and the use of potentially dangerous chemicals that could leach into the water supply. Numerous cases in the US, which has led the way in releasing gas from shale rocks using fracking technology, have demonstrated evidence of contamination and dangerous leaks of methane.

How disturbing then to read a report that fossil fuel companies like Shell are lobbying governments to reject wind and solar power in favour of shale gas.

And because the problems at the Fukushima plant in Japan have put the future of the nuclear industry in doubt, the gas companies are now positioning themselves as the main "green" source of energy.

It's deceptive. The bottom line is this: the fossil fuel companies aim to kill the renewable energy industry and they are putting out misleading information to achieve that.
