Gaddafi's PR firm and human rights

The public relations business has always been a strange one. Now we have reports from Mother Jones that the the PR firm Brown Lloyd James which represented Muammar Gaddafi and the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is now working for Human Rights project which is apparently hosting a contest for a human rights logo, much akin to the peace sign.

As reported here, US Department of Justice records show the firm set up interviews between reporters and Gaddafi. It also helped distribute and edit op-eds written by the Libyan dictator, and it provided strategic advice to senior Libyan government officials and organized meetings with civic and non-governmental groups. They would have made a fortune doing that sort of work.

Now of course, a PR firm can work for whoever it wants. They don't really care where the money is coming from. But you have to question the ethics of a firm which has been working for leaders accused of murdering protestors, shooting dissidents and ones now branded as Interpol fugitives.

Promoting a human rights logo after that is more than a little ironic. Some might say it's a cover up for ethical lapses.
