Global warming = colder winters

The devastating impact of climate change will be felt profoundly in the Northern Hemisphere with warnings from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research that it could lead to colder winters in the northern countries. And it's likely to have a massive impact on economies.

The study found that a shrinking of sea ice in the eastern Arctic would create regional warming of lower air levels. That, according to the researchers, would lead to anomalies in atmospheric airstreams. That would triple the probability of cold winter extremes in Europe and northern Asia.

Rather than contradicting global warming, it supplements it. With global warming, we will see repeats of the heavy snows that hit the USA and Europe last winter.

At the same time, the Arctic region is heating up and scientists say the polar heating will create colder winters.

This is a serious problem for economies and infrastructure built around the status quo. Governments will have to spend more. It will be massive drain on public resources and that will create new tax pressures on a fragile Eurozone and US economy unable to extricate themselves from financial crisis.
