The fallout from the BP oil spill continues with reports that Oregon State university researchers have found that cancer causing compounds rose significantly in the waters off the Louisiana coast during the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
It's not just a bit either. The research showed that researchers had found a 40 fold increase in the number of carcinogens let loose in the Gulf. And that's just data from May to June. The July data was lost which means it could be a lot worse.
All this has been neglected by authorities. Gina Solomon of the University of California San Francisco Medical School has told the Voice of America that there has hardly been any health studies into the 35 or so oil spills that have occurred in recent decades. There has been no long term study of the health effects.
The US government needs to act now. And in the meantime, BP better start assembling its army of lawyers for the inevitable litigation
