And so the Beatles tunes are finally available on iTunes.
True, Yoko Ono on Twitter greeted the news warmly. "In the joyful spirit of GivePeaceAChance I think its so appropriate that we are doing this on John's 70th bday yr"
But when you think about it, the it's pretty underwhelming. As commentator Peter Kafka points out, it's not that big a deal. Sure, it might see a spike in music sales on iTunes but Apple moved on from iTunes music sales a long time ago and iTunes is all about apps these days.
In any case, most of the music will be downloaded in the form of singles at $1.29 a pop when the reality is that the real value of the Beatles lies with their entire albums. You get more out of them by listening to entire albums like the Double White, Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road. What iTunes is offering is cheap and nasty.
That's why a lot of artists are still boycotting iTunes. Names include AC-DC, Frank Zappa and Jay-Z.
Apple's Steve Jobs says the announcement of the Beatles on iTunes is a day we'd never forget. We probably will.
