The effects of climate change are upon us with reports that 2010 is the hottest year on record. The Economist notes that the last time it was as hot as this was 1998.
More alarmingly, it's been a year of completely unpredictable weather patterns. What we're seeing now is not so much global warming as global weirding. Pakistan experienced its worst ever floods, there were severe floods and deadly landslides in China, and there were extreme heatwaves in Russia and Eurasia. Bangladesh had it driest monsoon season, Canada had its warmest and driest winter ever and it was the coldest winter since the 1960s for Ireland and Scotland.
We have entered an era of rapid and unpredictable weather patterns and climate change. Indeed, the new climate norm is constant change.
The big question is whether countries can adapt to that. It's not looking good so far.
