How Amazon could have avoided the latest scandal

Amazon is in serious trouble after it pulled an electronic book, "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct," from its online store after complaints and a boycott threat that came after a campaign on Twitter, Facebook and other media. Some examples here and here.

Amazon was forced to act. But in the lead up to that, it had put out a statement defending its actions. "Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable. Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions."

In other words, we don't care what the individual is pushing, as long as we can make a buck out of it. In any case, Amazon is still selling questionable content. Amazon got into trouble because there was no quality control.

Barbara Hernandez at PC World says Amazon could have easily defused the situation if it had monitored what it was putting out. And as she says, it's a mistake that could potentially tarnish the reputation of all e-books. Strategically stupid because it could damage a big market for Amazon.

Amazon slipped up badly, showing the world it was strategically myopic.
