Huffington Post overtaking the New York Times

Could the Huffington Post be overtaking in New York Times in traffic? The figures seem to suggest that which might be telling us that pay walls at newspapers like the New York Times don't actually work.

Check out this graph and this tweet claiming that the HuffPost came in at 33.59MM versus the New York Times which recorded 35.5MM.

Analyst Henry Blodget predicts that the Huffington Post will be bigger than the New York Times in terms of online traffic by the end of this year, and reckons that by 2012, it could be within spitting distance of the NYT in terms of online revenue.

The Huffington Post made $15 million in terms of revenue last year and it expects this will reach $60 million by 2012. Now that's nowhere near the $1 billion in revenue made by the New York Times but the problem there is that that is shrinking. Huffington Post revenues by way of contrast are heading in the opposite direction.

If he is right, it's only a matter of time before the Huffington Post floats on the market as the new media giant.
