An alarming story about a lawsuit filed in a Seattle federal court alleging that Microsoft intentionally designed its Windows Phone 7 to track customers without their consent.
Dan Levine at Reuters says there are claims that Microsoft intentionally designed camera software on the Windows Phone 7 operating system that specifically ignored customer requests that they not be tracked. "The litigation, brought on behalf of a Windows Phone 7 user, claims Microsoft transmits data — including approximate latitude and longitude coordinates of the user's device — while the camera application is activated. It seeks an injunction and punitive damages, among other remedies,'' Levine writes.
This is a trend in the tech industry. In April, we had revelations that Apple's iPhone keeps track of where you go . Again, that's without the consent of the user. It's a matter that has gone before Congress and Apple has claimed it's all about improving service, not stalking customers. No doubt Microsoft would say the same.
Trouble is most customers would not necessarily believe that. The tech industry is risking trust here, and they will need to manage it a lot better. It also tells us that the industry needs to be monitored.
