Misinformed Fox News viewers

And so now a University of Maryland study confirms something we have all suspected for some time: people who watch Fox News are ignorant, maybe even downright stupid.

The study found that people who watched Fox News were likely to be "misinformed". According to the study, Fox News fans were more likely to think that Obama's stimulus package had caused job losses and taxes to go up. They were also more likely to believe that most scientists don't think climate change is occurring and they were less likely to be certain that Obama was born in the United States.

Writing in the Atlantic, blogger Andrew Sullivan is not surprised. "Let's be clear about this,'' Sullivan writes "One alleged news network fed its audience a diet of lies, while contributing financially to the party that benefited from those lies. Those who work for Fox News are not working for a journalistic enterprise. They are working for the communications department of a political party. And that's a fact.''

This would be funny if it wasn't scary. Fox News is actually shaping public attitudes and political debate in the US. As I pointed out in my blog post here, Fox News has been instructing its reporters to play down climate change. Fox feeds off the ignorance of its viewers.

  1. I think you’re the one who stupid and ignorant since you believe only in leftist lies when in reality the truth is manipulated by the extremists on both sides.

  2. Interesting, I am curious to know the demographics of the “stupid” people who were included in the study. To me it boils down to which news station is a govt. employee, someone without a high school education, or someone on welfare more likely to watch. I’ll choose the opposite.
