The managers at Rupert Murdoch's greatest blunder MySpace have announced they're sacking 47% of the site's staff. And they've added insult to injury with an offensive pink slip.
TechCrunch reports that MySpace CEO Mike Jone sent 500 staff the following note: "Although we can't continue on this journey together-I hope you will all stay connected with MySpace and know that your contribution to the business was a unique moment in time and that you participated in something that few have been part of in our industry."
Yeah, really unique. People work their guts out to try and be web pioneers and they're rewarded with the sack.
Of course, Murdoch is sacking staff to dress up MySpace for a sale. Bloomberg reports that MySpace spokeswoman Rosabel Tao says the company is looking at a sale as an option. The question is who the hell would buy it? Analysts say MySpace might be too damaged a site for anyone to buy. Or if they do, they are not going to pay much. Certainly nowhere near the $580 million Murdoch spent buying it. It will be a bargain basement sale and Murdoch will lose a packet.
Word around the traps is that if Murdoch can't find a buyer, he'll shut it down. But then why not just do it now? Why wait?
