Political leaders, financial crisis and the courts

In one of the most extraordinary, a former political leader is facing charges over the financial crisis. Iceland's ex- Prime Minister Geir Haarde has been referred to a special court, effectively put on trial for his country's financial crisis. This will make him the first world leader who has been brought to justice for the financial meltdown. Hopefully, he won't be the last.

He faces two years in jail if he is convicted for not doing enough to prevent Iceland's banks from collapsing.

Iceland's debt-fueled financial system collapsed at the height of the worldwide financial crisis, sending its currency tumbling and unemployment soaring. Iceland's parliament has since agreed on tougher rules for the government and financial system to avoid a similar meltdown from happening again.

The big question many would ask would be why other political leaders aren't being given the same treatment.
