Pornography and elections: rising to the occasion

With polls showing that the Democrats are going to get hammered in the mid-term elections, a new study suggests that pornographers might be cleaning up in the states that vote Republican.

Salon reports how the study has found that post election web searches for pornography goes up in states that voted for the winning political party. According to the researchers, it happens because men's testosterone rises after a vicarious win. That would be the case regardless of which side of politics won the election. The researchers write: ""Given the frequency that males use the internet to search for pornography … and the keywords used in the current study to operationally define pornography searchers (e.g., 'boobs,' 'tits,' etc.), it seems likely that the observed findings were driven by males."

That means Republicans and Tea Party supporters are going to be looking at lots of X rated material over the next month. In the states that vote Democrat, however, screens will stay switched off.

But it does leave us with one question: as Salon correctly asks, how do women celebrate electoral success?
