
It looks like gentrification is going to kill off the clown Ronald McDonald, the face of McDonald's for 48 years.
As reported here, with increased competition from more upscale chains, such as Starbucks, McDonald's today is more focused on selling profitable coffee drinks and salads rather than Big Macs and kids' Happy Meals. The company is also tarting up its restaurants. It's even added padded seating and free WiFi to lure more diners. That does not leave any room for a buffoon in a bright yellow suit and ridiculously large red shoes. The problem for McDonald's is that consumers link the clown to the old high fat foods.
Still, the clown hasn't been completely retired yet. McDonald's still plans to roll him out at birthday parties and school assemblies, not to mention is presence at Ronald McDonald. Some bad habits never die.
