She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; junk food

A new study reported in Bloomberg shows that fatty foods are as addictive as cocaine, and that could result in law suits against fast food companies.

According to Bloomberg, one study had rats engaging in binge eating. The rats were given access for one hour daily to junk food like Hormel Foods Corp. bacon, Sara Lee pound cake, The Cheesecake Factory cheesecake and Pillsbury Creamy Supreme cake frosting. Rats given access to the food for long periods of time became obese. The rats showed the same brain pattern seen with escalating use of cocaine. In another study, pictures of milkshakes triggered the same reaction in fat people as pictures of alcohol did for alcoholics.

Kelly Brownell, director of Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity told Bloomberg this could change the legal landscape. "People knew for a long time cigarettes were killing people, but it was only later they learned about nicotine and the intentional manipulation of it," Brownell said.

Not surprisingly, the Jezebel site now refers to junk food companies as dealers and the criminal justice site refers us to some lawsuits now hitting junk food companies. With this sort of research, we can expect more of that to happen.
