Spam and social media

Spam and social media

The spamming epidemic appears to be over. Spamming is said to have declined largely as a result of sustained work by online security firms. The Economist reports that they have targeted every chain of the process to effectively stop 98 per cent of spam reaching inboxes. In addition, the forces behind spamming have come to realise there is a limited return on their investment. For example, a 2008 study found only 28 "sales" resulted from 350 million spam messages. That's not much return and not surprising at all. Most people just hit delete.

But spamming is now moving into the new territory of social media. And that's one area where it will boom. In its report, security firm Symantec says that while conventional spam has fallen away sharply, phishing attacks on social media have risen 80%. Indeed, social media is a perfect home for spam because of the necessary openness of its architecture.
