The Tea Party is now targeting corporate America, or more particularly corporations that have a good relationship with the Obama administration. Notably, GE and Johnson and Johnson are in their sights.
Paul Bedard at US News reports that the conservative action group and Tea Party backer FreedomWorks is urging supporters to punish huge corporations like General Electric and Johnson and Johnson for backing Obama's progressive agenda on issues such as health care and cap and trade. It's surging the public to boycott their products and breaking up the "unholy alliance" between business and government. Bedard writes: "A Tea Party boycott could be bigger and impact the political world in Washington where corporations are generally viewed as supporting Republicans."
In other words, the Tea Party is sending a message to corporate America: you back Obama and we will destroy you.
Paul Waldman at the American Prospect calls it for what it is: "If corporations want to play in politics, whether it's in campaigns or lobbying for legislation, they ought to expect that their actions will become public and some people might not like what they've done. It's actually something we could use more of. But no one should be allowed to pretend that FreedomWorks' effort is about anything but helping Republicans and hurting Democrats."
