The exploitation of Apple's Chinese workers

Foxconn, the company that manufactures Apple products and other electronics, has called in the police to arrest three workers for allegedly leaking design details of Apple's iPad 2 ahead of its release.

All is not well at the Foxconn plant. The Guardian reports that an investigation has found that poorly paid workers are now working excessive hours and suffering humiliations in the drive to produce iPads and iPhones for the rest of the world.

The investigators found that workers were putting in excessive overtime, some as much as 98 hours of overtime a month, that workers are being pressured to take one day off in 13, that poor performers are humiliated in front of their colleagues, that they are squeezed into dormitories that can sleep up to 24 people so there is no room to move around, and that after a spate of suicides last year, they now have to sign a statement promising not to kill themselves and pledging to "treasure their lives".

The Guardian cites a statement by Apple: "Apple is committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility throughout our supply base. Apple requires suppliers to commit to our comprehensive supplier code of conduct as a condition of their contracts with us. We drive compliance with the code through a rigorous monitoring programme, including factory audits, corrective action plans and verification measures."

Yeah right!
