What's the book of the future going to look like? Writers like Dave Eggers are saying that contrary to conventional wisdom, books have a great future and will still be in demand and that book sales are holding steady.
But BusinessWeek says the book is looking at a new kind of future. BusinessWeek says the book is not going to go away but it will look very different.
It says the definition of "book" will change to include blogs, research papers and other forms of writing. Amazon, for example, has asked writers and publishers to submit short works to a new section of the US online retail giant's electronic bookstore called "Kindle Singles" which, Amazon says, will showcase works that are "twice the length of a New Yorker feature or as much as a few chapters of a typical book." Borders has teamed up with an outfit called Bookbrewer to create a service that allows bloggers to publish what is effectively an e-book.
So people will continue to read "books". It's just that the definition of "books" will become more fluid in this online world. Fortunately, it might mean more people are reading.
