The American military has plans to manipulate social media for propaganda purposes. Wired reveals that the Pentagon has a bizarre technology arm Darpa that seeks to detect and conduct propaganda campaigns on social media.
According to Wired, this will do more than just check what people are saying on Facebook and Twitter. It wants to seek out "persuasion campaign structures and influence operations" developing across the social sphere. It's looking to build a tool to sniff out social media propaganda campaigns and then spit out some counter-spin. Adam Rawnsley at Wired says: "It's about building a better spin machine for Uncle Sam, too.''
As reported here, Darpa plans to spend $42 million on the Social Media in Strategic Communication (SMISC) program. That massive investment tells us that Pentagon regards social media as the next battlefield of war.
