A former head of US intelligence now says the war on terror should be scrapped. It's simply not worth it and it's costing the US $20 million per terrorist.
Wired reports that the former Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair, who was, until recently, nominally in charge of the entire American effort to find, track, and take out terrorists, says that the war on terror and the drone attacks in Pakistan are not providing that big a return on investment.
He says US intelligence and homeland security communities are now spending $80 billion a year on the war against terror. Yet there are only 4000 Al-Qaeda members, which comes out to $20 million per terrorist. "You think – woah, $20 million. Is that proportionate?" Blair asks. "So I think we need to relook at the strategy to get the money in the right places."
