Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been getting millions from wealthy oil clients.
One example of that was his close relationship with Gaddafi. Blair led British efforts to end Libya's pariah status in diplomatic circles. He visited Tripoli in 2004 to congratulate Gaddafi for giving up attempts to acquire weapons of mass destruction and after leaving office in 2007, he had at least six meetings with the dictator. He was flown to Tripoli on a private jet paid for by the Gaddafi regime. Blair works with JP Morgan, the US investment bank that in 2009 attempted to broker a large commercial deal between the Gaddafi regime and a Russian aluminium company. Blair made a lot of money out of that relationship with the former Libyan dictator.
Blair has developed his links with JP Morgan through his company Tony Blair Associates. His other clients include insurance group Zurich and the government of Kuwait.
But Blair has now moved on to a new despot. The Financial Times reports that he is now advising Kazakhstan on its economy and how to present a better image to the West. The deal, according to the FT, is worth a cool $13 million. According to the US State Department, human rights abuses in Kazakhstan include detainee and prisoner torture, unhealthy prison conditions, arbitrary arrest and detention, lack of an independent judiciary, restrictions on freedom of speech and harassment that kills people.
Given his experience with Gaddafi, Blair would be well-versed with that.
