UN warns of food riots

The next few weeks could see throw developing countries and the world into chaos. The food crisis is entering a serious stage with the United Nations warning that we could be seeing food riots with prices hitting new highs over the next few weeks.

Abdolreza Abbassian, senior grains economist at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation says: ""Europe is entering a very critical month. We can't do without rain any more. If the current situation continues prices will respond very aggressively. Our fear is that we still haven't seen the worst of food inflation in vulnerable countries and that could be coming. One way or another, rising food prices bring hardship on their people and you can't rule out the possibility of further food riots. A lot depends on the next few weeks and it's impossible to predict how Mother Nature will behave."

A perfect storm of forces is creating the crisis with scarcities of water, good land, energy, nutrients, technology, fish and, significantly, stable climates. You can add to that population growth, consumer demand and protectionist trade policies.

In other words, it's being driven by a confluence of intractable forces which means there is no "silver bullet" solution.

Governments around the world will have to reach some sort of consensus to tackle the problem. Given their struggles to come up something that will address climate change, we can't expect it will be easy to solve the gloval food crisis. The political fallout will be immense
