US judge rules that corporations can bankroll politicians

A US judge has just given the green light for American corporations to undermine democracy.

As reported here, the judge has ruled that the century old campaign-finance law banning corporations from making contributions to federal candidates is unconstitutional. Basically, US district judge James Cacheris says that corporations enjoy the same rights as individuals to contribute to campaigns.

This is a devastating ruling because it opens up the prospects of corporations, like the Koch brothers and Donald Trump, bankrolling their preferred candidates. There are rulings in other states stating the opposite which means this case is likely to end up in the US Supreme Court.

As activist Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21 told Politico, Judge Cacheris has over-stepped the mark and his ruling could destroy democracy by giving big business too much power. ""If you were to hypothetically eliminate the ban on corporate contributions and the contribution limits, you would establish a system of legalized corruption of our government and our elected officials," said Wertheimer.
