US Supreme Court stops Abu Ghraib lawsuit

In a decision that contradicts the United States' treaty obligations, the US Supreme Court, with the support of the Obama administration, has told alleged victims of torture inflicted by US private military contractors at Abu Ghraib and other sites that they can't sue the perpetrators in American courts.

The court ruling is at odds with a Department of Defense finding that detainees were subjected to "numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses"

The United States is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which ensures that anyone who has been victim of unlawful arrest or detention will have an "enforceable right to compensation".

The US Supreme Court has made a complete mockery of that. With the backing of its highest court, the US is now breaching its treaty and moral obligations.
