Accountants rake it in

I keep raising the question whether accountants are recession-proof.

Now we have further evidence of that with the latest Hewitt study showing that the bean counters are going to get the biggest above average salary increase in 2009

A pay rise of 4.6 per cent is a lot healthier than the flat pay for the rest of the US workforce and Morgan Stanley warning that the slump has only just begun.

When I talk to college freshmen I tell them the accounting curriculum is really tough, it will take a lot of really hard work, and not everyone can do it (all true).

I also tell them the will have a much better chance at internships and jobs.

Fair? Those who work the hardest get the best opportunities at this point in time.

Do some of the firms deserve the largesse – probably not.
