Airline strikes hit

Airlines have been hit hard by the global financial crisis, security scares and pandemics. With airline travel now hitting a record low, they have been losing billions, something I have looked at here and here.

It's not surprising then that the airlines have been cutting costs and, as a result, it's triggered widespread industrial action. The first was with Lufthansa pilots going out on strike over pay and job security.

That's been suspended but now British Airways pilots are striking over cost cuts. British Airways says it has no choice because it's headed for losses but staff say they can't take more of the cuts. This dispute is likely to drag on and it will damage BA's reputation even further.

It's a matter of time until industrial action hits other airlines around the world. They're under the same pressure. Which raises one question: what would happen to job security if, for example, Lufthansa or British Airways went bust? Or for that matter, any other airline. Something for the striking pilots to think about. They're not exactly the lowest paid workers in the world.
