The tobacco industry is now targeting women.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the Global Adult Tobacco Survey has found that the tobacco industry is now courting a new growth market: young women in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Thailand and Uruguay. The idea is to seduce them with advertising that exploits notions of deas of independence, emancipation, sex appeal, slimness, glamour and beauty.
The paper reports that the rate of female smokers worldwide is expected to double by 2025, from about 9 percent in 2007 while the male smoking rate of about 40 percent has peaked and is expected to start falling.
Amid these claims that the tobacco industry is targeting young woman, the journal Pediatrics has revealed that the Camel No 9 cigarette campaign successfully targeted girls. These ads were put together RJ Reynolds and as the New York Daily News reports, the ads ran in magazines like Vogue, Glamour and Cosmopolitan and featured promotional giveaways like berry-flavored lip balm, cell phone jewelry, wristbands and purses.
Totally shameless and unethical, but then what would you expect of tobacco companies.
