As expected, the Great Recession has created a baby bust. Fewer people are now having kids and the birth rate is falling.
The New York Times reports that last year, the birth rate in the US last year slipped 2% and by as much as 7% in Florida. With people losing jobs, mostly men, it's no time to start a family.
Given that economic conditions will remain at best sluggish for the next few years - it certainly won't feel like a recovery - it will be interesting to see what happens to the birth rate.
Students of history will know that the birth rate crashed by something 10% back then. That was only resolved by the massive deficit-financed public works program, otherwise known as World War Two.
Let's see what it would take to get the birth rate back up again this time.
